I’m sure we have all either had an awful wax experience or have a friend/colleague/relative who has.

My worst experience was doing my bikini wax as a teenager using home waxing strips that are heated between your hands. The srips would not come off without a LOT of pulling, leaving me very brusied and caked in sticky goo. It was a good few years before I even considered getting a bikini wax again!

We would always recommend getting your waxing done at a salon by trained professionals – you will get a better finish and a more comfortable treatment than doing the treatment yourself annd the results are worth it.

    How to choose a Salon/Therapist

  • Recommendation is always the best option, ask your friends, family or work colleagues if they can recommend a salon/therapist and book in there. If you don’t know anyone who is regularly waxed then research salons and read reviews online and on their websites.
  • Good waxes are important for a good wax. Cheap waxes generally leave skin feeling bumpy and can sensitize and irritate skin. High grade waxes have additional ingredients to make them far more comfortable on your skin and enable hair removal with less discomfot when the hair comes out. Find out what wax the salon uses and ask about the benefits of the wax.
  • Safe, soothing and antiseptic waxing products are an absolute must. Skin should be properly cleansed before waxing to ensure the area is clean, using products free from petroleum and paraffin so your pores and hair follicles are not blocked. Ideally you should have a barrier oil/serum applied prior to being waxed to make the waxing less painful, this should be free from petroleum, paraffin and talc to ensure no blocked pores/hair follicles. Aftercare cream/lotion/oil/serum should be antiseptic and soothing to calm the skin, reduce irritation and kill bacteria, using products free from petroleum, paraffin and talc to ensure no blocked pores/hair follicles.
  • Hot Wax should be used on delicate areas such as facial waxing, underarms, nipples and bikini. Hot wax is the most gentle type of wax meaning your skin will be well taken care of and your experience will be as comfortable as possible.
  • Your therapist should be fully qualifed to wax you and should be experienced. For Brazilian/Hollywood/Intimate waxing your therapist must also have a separate formal qualification to carry out the treatment. This ensures you are in competant hands and that you will have a safe wax. If in doubt ask about qualifications and experience of the staff who are waxing you.
  • When booking bikini waxes make sure you understand what you are booking in for as diferent salons have different definitions. Traditionally a bikini wax is everything outwith the pant line, a high bikin/g-string wax is everything outside a g-string, a brazilian/sphynx is everything off the bikini line, labia, anus but leaving a landing strip/small triangle on top and a hollywood is everything off. A playboy/vajazzle is a hollywood or brazillian with bikini jems placed on the bikin area.
  • The treatment room, therapist and utensils should be hygeinic and clean. The therapist should always wash their hands prior to treatment and should wear gloves when carrying out brazilian/hollywood treatments. Tweezers should be sterilised before use, you can always ask to be sure.
  • If you have any other questions about choosing a suitable salon/therapist do ask.

If you still prefer to wax at home this is what we would suggest:

    Waxing at Home

  • Use professional waxing products for the best finish
  • Make sure you have privacy and time to wax yourself without interuptions
  • ALWAYS stetch, stretch and stretch some more to avoid bruising
  • Ensure you use as after wax lotion/cream/serum/oil to care for your skin.
  • Happy Waxing! :D
